My father was a naturalist, author and Biology professor who taught Plant Taxonomy, among other things. Much of my life saw him either with binoculars in hand or kneeling to photograph all kinds of plants and flowers.

But beyond that lovely fact lies a more universal message for everyone. About seeking and finding magic and beauty amongst the thorns. This image is my favorite of all, not just because of my Dad, but because it symbolizes the reason for all my creative pursuits -- music, photography, relationships, building community and the way I move through the world.

This was taken behind the Bishop's House, at the Old Penitentiary in Boise, Idaho.
