Door In Flowers
On a whim in 2007, I took an old mahogany door from my landlord's garage and kept it in the back of my truck for a few months, just driving around Northern California when I had time and photographing this door on film in all kinds of environments -- in snow near Tahoe, in parking lots between buildings in San Francisco, on the ruins of Sutro Baths, an abandoned outdoor swimming pool on Treasure Island, among many others. A total of over 40 different locations in all. I built adjustable, hidden legs on the back of the door, so I could quickly and easily position it nearly anywhere, by myself.
Unfortunately, I lost most of the images from that project in a wildfire in 2015. But this one was probably the best, and it's such a powerful and mysterious image.
