From 1948 until his death in 2016, Richard Zimmerman lived in a cave he dug himself above the Salmon River in Idaho, very near the Montana Border. He was known far and wide as "Dugout Dick", and was featured on popular TV shows in the 1970s/1980s, like Real People and That's Incredible. I had the honor of spending time with him in 2004, and took portraits of him with a 1930s Graflex 4x5 box film camera. He regaled me with stories of his days in the Merchant Marines during WWII, and the wild nights as a bar musician in San Francisco for two years after the war, before moving to Idaho and making his cave dwelling.
