Richard E. Zimmerman was a sailor with the Merchant Marines during WWII, and after the war, spent some time playing music in a saloon in San Francisco. In 1947, he moved near the Idaho-Montana border and bought a hillside overlooking the Salmon River, and lived in a series of dug-out caves until his death in 2010. He was nicknamed "Dugout Dick" by the locals, and found some fame as a feature on popular 1970s and 1980s TV shows like That's Incredible and Real People, and Ripley's Believe It Or Not made a featured exhibit recreation of his cave dwelling. I had a chance to visit him in his home in 2003, where I took some portraits.
